Lots of construction work going on here so life is a bit hectic but it doesn’t hinder the preparations for the forthcoming seminar run by Ycademy, Shoot – Share – Sell!

As the market expands to mobile devices so must the sites that market products be mobile efficient, whether you sell photography, auto-parts or collectibles.  Semiomantics latest development the EVO – replaces the outdated version from 2 years ago which supported flash, great on desktop computers but not mobile compatible.

Now you will be able to access your new EVO directly from your mobile upload your product then share it on the social networks and direct them to your ecommerce portal. Shoot it, share it, sell it.

As always the Ycademy seminars are run every month online; attend from the comfort of your own armchair and computer of course. Pre-seminar calls have already taken place with some preliminary information regarding the set-up and  materials. I am really looking forward to lots of hands-on workshops and as always lots of fun! When you are wrapped up in what you do – a new website under construction - its amazing how quickly the seminar weekend flies by.

This seminar will be just the begining of this years project for me so there will be more posts and information regarding this topic in the coming months.

Kid’s Own Website

Children love repetition! Watching or reading the same thing over, and over again. Us adults get bored but they just love it. With this in mind  I created a website for my grandson where he can see the things he loves, over and over again. Yes, over on over again. Over time I add more to this website, pictures of things he has seen, is familiar with.  You may say that he doesn’t learn anything new, well its quite the opposite.

With each picture and each viewing he spots something different and then I encourage some new words and tell a little story. It’s amazing how much you get out of one picture with a little bit of imagination. 

Kids Love to Learn

Kids love to learn and thats for sure! They see you at the computer, they want to copy. My grandson begs to see the animals and toys  on his website everyday, and with a little help  from me knows all the sounds and names.  What better way to provide education and build confidence in technology that will be part of his everyday life.

Your Kid’s Website

We do need parental control over the things our children see even at an early age.  As parent I know that not all thing online are suitable for young inquisitive minds  and fingers which is why I created a website for my grandson where we have full control of what he sees, adding more familiar images and sounds over time, a website  full of the fun things he loves . There is also a place on his website where he can go to play -  the drawing board, and play with the mouse and learn to click and draw. Total Control of what your child sees and does.

The whole site is a work in progress and will grow with him over the years.

Learning Basics of HTML

When you first start to do things on the internet you are quite happy to follow existing programs getting the feel of how it all operates and learning how to find your way around. Then comes the time when you want to start branching out a little on your own, doing things for yourself. This is the time when you need to learn some basics, like learning the ABC of the internet, learning some Basics of  HTML.

Some people are put of by this notion of learning something new thinking its really difficult, however HTML really isn’t that hard. Remember when you first  stared to do sums at school? well once you understood how it all worked it was all easy. HTML is pretty simple.

Basics of HTML

HTML stand for Hyper Text Markup Language. The language is easy, its plain english.The words we use everyday. To get these words to be visible in a browser we need to give the browser instructions to read them. The instructions are the HTML,  this is what the browser looks for to display correctly what you have written.

HTML Tags

Instructions come in the form of a series of  tags <tag>. Each tag gives an instruction. Each tag is a keyword surrounded by brackets <tag>. Its very much like the training soldiers receive to stand to attention and then to be at ease. You give the command, then you close or finish the command. So we have an opening <tag> and a closing </tag>. The / tells us its the closing tag instruction.
 
Just learning a few basic tag functions will help you with some very basics tasks online like inserting the html code for a banner for example. I remember myself the frustration I had when trying to do this when I first ventured out online without first learning some Basic HTML. Had I first learnt some of the basics I wouldn’t have wasted an hour or two in frustration.

Having a handy reference that you can refer to at anytime, like the ‘Ycademy Basic HTML’ is so useful, and you can return to it time and time again till you are more proficient in what you do. Printing out a copy and keeping it handy I personally found was easier. I was educated in the era when printed matter was all there was so old habits die hard.

Learning Vocabulary

Things change so fast, not only here online in cyber world but also in the real world. We have to keep pace by continually learning, as mentioned in my previous post, by absorbing new ideas, vocabulary and concepts in order to be able to communicate with others.

Vocabulary

This weekend I learnt something new, even at my age!

We all are exposed to and absorb a basic vocabulary in our pre-school years. From then on as we socialise we build  upon that foundation and add more words that we absorb and learn without even thinking about it. Further education and learning increases our vocabulary even more as we often learn technical terms that are required by our careers or jobs.

Language itself evolves as its used from day to day, and if we look back to say the Elizabethan times, (about the time of Shakespeare), the  average vocabulary of an adult was around 500 words although Shakespeare himself had a vocabulary of around 21,000 words. He was a well educated man.

Having grown up children is a real eye opener sometimes. This weekend I felt a if I had dropped in of the moon! When youngsters get together they speak their own language. This language was something I could not understand with ease, as they were using words and phrases I had never heard before. Colloquial english… the language of everyday with its own vocabulary,  phrases, nuances interspersed with slang. Certain words having taken on new meanings as the language evolves. Today ‘gay’ does not have the same meaning it had 50+years ago.  Unless you are versed in this very informal everyday speech it all can almost sound foreign.

I have a few friends who always rib me that I use ‘colonial english’ but then that was the vocabulary, language and pronunciation  I was taught and brought up with. Not exactly ‘colonial english’ as I’m not a dinosaur yet, but certainly grammatically correct. Even in the short span of my life time language has evolved immensely, and just as I don’t understand Chaucer’s 14th century language, nor will future generations understand today’s spoken words so well.

Children Learning Language

Listening to the spoken word

Children start learning language from a very early age by listening to adults around, primarily their parents and siblings. They mimic what they hear, not necessarily understanding the meaning of the words they use. They also learn by the tone of voice which words create displeasure and which approval. Today they are also influenced by television, videos, radios etc which they often hear in their environment.  Even at a very young age they are listening intently, absorbing like a sponge, learning. My grandson is less than 6months old but already he recognises and responds to his name, and tries to communicate with you with noises in his own fashion.

Children learn language fast as they are not inhibited like adults, they are happy to give it a go and if they make mistakes they are easily corrected.  Eager to learn, eager to communicate. Encouragement goes a long to helping their linguistic development.
