Creating a Flash Website

Having gone through deciding upon the images to use when I create my Flash Website I now have an importnt decision to make regarding the fonts that I will use throughout the site.

Fonts

When building any website one of the most important factors to consider is the style of the typeface you will use. The reason for this is that different fonts will look different on different backgrounds and in different browsers. What may look good in Internet Explorer may not look so good in Firefox. Where there is little contrast between background.

Serif Fonts

It is also necessary to think of your readers, not all have perfect eyesight, hence we also need to consider the size of the font we are about to use.  Fonts that look good on printed matter, like the Times New Roman font with its curly ends, serif,  – T -, are not easy to read on the www.

Also, where there is little contrast between background  and the typeface readers find it difficult to read.

Sans Serif Fonts

Fonts without the serif, sans serif fonts, are more clear when used in text. If we do not specify a font to be used in our design then the default font on your computer is used. This could of course spoil your design by making line breaks in the wrong places or due to the increase in size look totally out of proportion in the design.

Choosing my Font

There are numerous fonts to choose from, but the font I choose must not only display well when used in  large type but also when used in plain text in the content, around 12pt in size. Heading 1 and heading 2 must also be considered as these are the most commonly used. Selecting a font may therefore take time to test and re-test.

Part of the ‘look’ of any website is the fontface that is used, for the title and the body or contents. Visitors do remember the look, the colour and the feel of a site. 

For this site, ‘Web Design’, I have already settled on a title font, however for the h1,h2,h3 that is used in the body I have been experimenting with a few different fonts to see which suits the layout and title of this site better.

There are many sites online that offer free fonts. Decide on the category of font that suits the style of your site and save the font to your hard drive. By building up a selection of fonts you can thus experiment on your site.

Choosing a font for Web Design

Fonts do have to be clearly visible and esily read if used mainly in text.
After much consideration I came down to two choices. The Dali font and the sf_scribbled_sans_bold both handwriting fonts. The Dali font I decided that  here it was too thin and too feint in certain letters like the ’s’, so not too easy to read, whereas the sf sctribbled sans bold was much more inkeeping with the title font and by being bold and easier to read.

Web Design is a ’sandbox’ – hence the style of font here marries up with the ‘note taking’ scribble/experimental theme.
